Finishing Details

As this project in downtown Toronto comes to a close, we want to talk about the simple elements and accessories that we believe make the space truly unique and extravagant. We chose to have all gold fixtures and hardware in the master suite to stand out and act as the bathroom jewelry against the almost monochromatic tile and vanity. All fixtures were custom made by Rubinet - they have so many finish options and and a great reputation for being good quality. The handle profile we went with is a modern cross lever, paired with a rounded arched neck. The look of these fixtures is really simple and contemporary. Even the toilet paper holder is gold!

Throughout the entire house we chose to update all of the main level potlights and added the same ones to the second level as well. All LED Halo lights in a cool tone to brighten up this older home. However, we did add one feature wall sconce between the two vanity mirrors. This antique was found during the reno and immediately became one of our biggest inspiration pieces for this design.

In the shower we did a herringbone pattern with the 2" x 12" marble tile in a honed finish. If you want this look for a cheaper price, ask your supplier to cut a 12"x12" tile into 6 pieces. These skinny tiles are extremely fragile, so make sure to order more than required! This tile was the accent strip for the tile north wall and floor. We were able to use a linear shower grate at one side so this tile was usable on the floor, instead of having a slope on all sides with a centered drain. The main tile is a 12"x24" porcelain tile to look like carrara marble - at a fraction of the cost.

Downstairs in the living and dining area, we have all white walls with black accents. By adding windows on either side of the original arch it makes the two spaces feel more connected and open. These matte black frame windows were custom made and designed by yours truly.

Because we were having these windows custom made, we asked the manufacturer to also make a few accent pieces like this fire log holder and towel rack in the same matte black metal. We absolutely love the way the warm tones of the wood tie in with the fireplace mantel and original doors. The same metal is repeated for the master bathroom shower and water closet enclosures.
